I need inspiration [artists similar to Jeff Buckley, Radiohead etc.]?

I'm a singer/songwriter and doing fairly well (if i say so myself)

I reckon I could go somewhere with songs and lyrics Im writing at the moment



I'm 17, 18 soon. Trying to broaden my syle as much as I can.

Lately I've been listening to negr0 prison songs and gospel spirituals.



My main inspirations have been:

I'm looking for more soulful acoustic songs.

Songs about loss, redemption etc.

Something with a very original style! Nothing mainstream (despite the fact my inspirations are mainstream)



Just music that changes you. Musicians with a passion!

Original style? Passion? Rufus Wainwright!

He incorporates a lot of genres into his music and makes something of his own out of it. So listening to one or two of his songs doesn't mean knowing his music. One of his most beautiful piano songs is 'Poses'. Then there are adult pop songs like 'California'. And there is a lot in between. His music has been labelled as baroque pop, operatic pop or chamber pop, but these terms are not enough to describe his whole music.

You can start on youtube, but often the videos there only show (great) stripped down versions with piano or guitar accompaniment. You should also try to listen into the orchestrated studio versions on iTunes or so.

Maybe check out Ween, they do everything, Maybe even Mr. Bungle if you want something really experimental (but most people don't get their music).

Check out Elliott Smith, acoustic, singer/songwriter, depressing songs, he's really good and writes about loss, depression and with a passion.
