Are Bob Dylan's lyrics solely what make him so legendary?

or is there something else?

I know he's best known as a fantastic lyricist (which he is) but do you reckon his involvement with the Civil Rights movement has something to do with his massive popularity? In many ways he defined a generation, and not even one in terms of age. By supporting and being active in the movement, he gained a lot of fans for reasons separate from even his amazing lyrics.

I'm kind of rambling, but what do you think? Are Bob Dylan's lyrics solely what make him so legendary?

Probably the main reason but not the only one. His melodies are very underrated, probably because he often doesn't bother to sing them and also as a live performer he was in his younger days one of the greatest.
I also believe he is one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, the emotion he puts into his voice is incredible, he can make you laugh and cry all in one song, he also has incredible timing, just try copying his vocals, there are times when you think he's not going to get that my words into that many beats of music but he does.
The whole civil rights thing arguably made him famous but he pretty soon abandoned protest songs for more esoteric material. His consistency is pretty amazing too, he's still producing music that's as good if not better than his 60's heyday.
